FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL

The first day of school is fast approaching on Tuesday, September 5th from 10:00-11:00 a.m. During this time, teachers will meet with students in grade groups and confirm numbers so that we can begin the process of forming classes. While students are with teachers, ALL PARENTS are welcome to join us for a PAC-sponsored coffee as well as an informal meet and greet with Ms. Vogstad in the gym.

The first FULL DAY of school is Wednesday, September 6th. The welcome bell goes at 8:30 a.m. and classes conclude at 2:25 p.m.

Kindergarten parents, please re-visit the information below regarding your child’s gradual entry.

So, where do students go on the first day?

Screen Shot 2017-08-31 at 8.49.20 PMIn addition to the above map, there will be maps and grade group signs posted all around our school to help families find the area and entrance door students will wait at and where they will be welcomed into the school by our teachers.   Every morning children will use the same grade group entrance; this is where grade groups will also exit at the end of each day.

Parents, don’t forget to join me for coffee, sponsored by the Jessie Lee PAC, and an informal meet and greet.  Hope to see you there!

CLASS ORGANIZATION

IMG_0756Over the summer our Jessie Lee neighbourhood has seen some changes with families moving out and new families moving in. Students will work in grade groups during the first few days of school as teachers work together to get to know students and build a sense of community through team work and getting-acquainted activities. Throughout the week teachers will revisit and collaboratively organize classes that best meet the learning needs of all our students. We hope that students will be in their permanent classes by the end of the first week, or at the latest, by the very beginning of the second week.  Thank you for your patience and understanding.

When students are placed in classes, the following factors are taken into consideration. As each class situation is different, the factors are not in order of importance.

• Academic Ability – we try to ensure that each class has students with a variety of ability levels
• Gender – attempts are made to form classes with equal numbers of girls and boys
• Group Dynamics – based on past experience, some students may not be placed in the same class as they experience difficulties together, while other students may be placed together because they work well together
• Behaviour – students requiring behavioural support are placed in classes that best meet their needs
• Teaching/Learning Styles – some students are placed in classes because the teaching/learning situation will be the most beneficial to them

Dr. Jordan Tinney, Superintendent of Surrey Schools, sent out a message this week to parents of elementary students, regarding the significant changes we are facing as we start the new school year.  I invite you to read this important letter which explains how the new rules regarding class size and composition will impact the organization of classes.    Dr. Tinney’s Parent Letter.

This letter was also posted earlier this week on our SurreySchools Website.

I think I speak on behalf of all Jessie Lee teachers and staff; we are looking forward to opening our doors and welcoming back our students and families to the start of a new and exciting school year. At Jessie Lee Elementary we hold community as a core value; we will work intentionally together to create community at every level of our school. In our classrooms, schedules, curriculum, and interactions our message is, “Everyone matters!” Together, we will work to build a learning community that fosters a sense of belonging, purpose, and respect for all of our students.

I hope you will take the opportunity to join me in building a supportive learning environment for all our students.

Sincerely, Kelli Vogstad
